HOT FLASH Premieres in New York City
One of the highlights of my year was seeing HOT FLASH, the Saffire musical, make its New York City debut.
Inspired by the music and legacy of Saffire – The Uppity Blues Women, the production brings our songs to the theatrical stage through a professionally scripted performance featuring original Saffire music and a talented cast.

JUNE 2026 • PRIDE MONTH 🏳️🌈
This year I was honored to receive two awards recognizing my work in music, advocacy, and LGBTQ+ communities.
D.C. Torchbearers Legacy Award
This year, I was deeply honored to receive the Legacy Award from the D.C. Torchbearers, recognizing my lifelong contributions to music, advocacy, and the LGBTQ+ community.
As one of just 25 Legacy Award recipients, I am proud to stand alongside remarkable changemakers whose voices, courage, and compassion continue to inspire others.
For me, music has always been more than entertainment—it has been a way to build community, encourage healing, and give voice to those whose stories deserve to be heard.
Receiving this award is both a tremendous honor and a reminder that the work continues.
The music continues. The movement continues.
🌈 Black Pride Richmond Icon Award
Presented by UGRC (Us Giving Richmond Connections)
I was deeply honored to be recognized as one of only seven recipients of the ICON Award, presented by UGRC’s Black Pride Richmond.
The Icon Award recognizes individuals whose leadership, creativity, advocacy, and service have made a lasting impact on the LGBTQ+ community. It celebrates those whose work continues to inspire others and strengthen our communities.
Throughout my career, I’ve believed that music is more than entertainment—it’s a bridge that brings people together, sparks conversation, celebrates our stories, and reminds us that every voice matters.
Receiving this honor is deeply meaningful. I’m grateful to UGRC’s Black Pride Richmond for this recognition and proud to stand alongside six extraordinary honorees whose work continues to inspire our community.
Music leaves a legacy. Community gives it purpose. Together, they create lasting change.

LGBT Blues (1921–1965)
One of the honors of this year was being invited to write the Foreword for LGBT Blues (1921–1965) by Spanish scholar Héctor Martínez González.
This beautifully researched book shines a light on the remarkable LGBTQ+ artists whose lives and music helped shape the blues. Their stories deserve to be remembered, celebrated, and shared.
I’m proud to have contributed to this important work and hope it inspires readers to discover the rich diversity and enduring legacy of the blues.

🎵 Preserving Blues History
After a lifetime devoted to the blues, I’m beginning to organize and share select pieces from my personal collection of blues memorabilia. Over the years, I’ve gathered rare vinyl records, CDs, books, photographs, posters, and other treasures that reflect the rich history and enduring legacy of this music.
Among the highlights are items from the renowned Rosetta Reitz Collection, along with unique memorabilia collected throughout my career as a performer, songwriter, and blues historian.
My hope is that these pieces will find new homes with collectors, libraries, museums, archives, educators, and blues enthusiasts who will value and help preserve this important history for future generations.

A Career-Defining Honor
Ma Rainey – Mother of the Blues
One of the greatest honors of my musical career was being invited to write the Foreword for the companion book included with the July 24 release of Ma Rainey – Mother of the Blues: The Complete Recordings.
I was honored to join Grammy Award-winning musician and historian Dom Flemons in writing the Foreword for the accompanying 100+ page book.
Dom explores the remarkable restoration of Ma Rainey’s recordings, while I reflect on her enduring legacy as a pioneering blues artist whose courage, music, and spirit continue to inspire generations.
Contributing to this remarkable collection is both a privilege and my heartfelt tribute to one of my greatest musical heroes.
